The thumbnails are resized to give 4:3 aspect ratio (16:9 for widescreen). The original images remain at 720 x 480 (3:2), except for widescreen images that are sized to 854 x 480 (16:9).
Most people automatically dismiss the use of lossy file format for image comparison. For most part, they are right. However, using lossless file format is impractical for more than a handful images. A lossless compressed file is typically 600 kB, compared to 100 kB for a high quality JPEG.
What about image degradation? Negligible at 100%. This can be confirmed by overlaying the BMP/PNG/TIF file and the JPEG file and taking their difference. Random pixels become visible only when you set the whitepoint to 5% of the blackpoint.
